Business idea validation

How to Validate a Business Idea Before Spending Money

Business idea validation means seeking evidence that a defined customer needs your solution and may actually pay for it. It is not the same as asking friends whether they like the idea.

State your riskiest assumption

Write: 'I believe [specific customer] will pay [price] for [specific result] because [problem].' This makes your hypothesis testable instead of vague.

Interview people with the problem

Ask what they tried previously, what it cost, and why existing alternatives fall short. Avoid leading questions such as 'Wouldn't you buy this?'.

Create a minimum useful offer

For a service, show the deliverable and terms. For a digital product, demonstrate a realistic sample. For a physical product, verify supply, safety, and fulfillment requirements before taking orders.

Measure action, not enthusiasm

Useful signals include paid pilots, deposits where appropriate, repeat inquiries, and signups followed by engagement. Compliments alone are weak evidence.

Make a go, change, or stop decision

Record how many qualified prospects you contacted, the number of responses, objections, costs, and actual conversions. Refine the model only when the evidence justifies it.
